Biography

Horman Chitonge is Professor of African Studies at the Centre for African Studies, University of Cape Town (UCT). He is currently the head of the African Studies and Linguistics Department at UCT.  He is also research associate at PRISM, School of Economics (UCT); a Visiting professor at African Studies Centre, Tokyo University of Foreign, and in the Global Justice Programme, Yale University. His research interests include Economic development in Africa, agrarian political economy, water supply, social welfare, poverty and inequality and alternatives for Africa’s economic growth. He has published extensively on these and related research areas. His most recent book published by Routledge in 2021 is titled Industrial Policy and the Transformation of the Colonial Economy in Africa.

 

Over the course of his career he has served as a Senior Economist with the International Finance Corporation and World Bank, as well as a consultant to the United Nations, Gates Foundation, and USAID. He currently works as a consultant to the African Development Bank and USAID.
